ANDOVER, MA — Tram Nguyen, a 31-year-old attorney from Andover making her first run for elected office, defeated state Rep. Jim Lyons in the 18th Essex District, which represents parts of Andover, North Andover, Tewksbury and Boxford. The Democrat becomes the first Vietnamese-American elected to the state legislature.
A spokesperson for Nguyen’s campaign said she had received about 54% of the vote and that Lyons had called to offer his concession.
Nguyen came to the U.S. when she was 5 and is the first Vietnamese-American to run for elected office in Massachusetts. She has been on a leave of absence from her job as an attorney for Greater Boston Legal Services since announcing her candidacy earlier this year.
