Andover resident and Boston legal aid attorney Tram Nguyen, 31, officially announced her candidacy for state representative of the 18th Essex District on Tuesday. If elected, Nguyen would take over the seat now held by Republican Jim Lyons, who is running for reelection.
The district includes the towns of Andover, Boxford, North Andover and Tewksbury.
Nguyen (pronounced “win”), is running as a Democrat.
Nguyen is the first Vietnamese-American woman to run for office in Massachusetts. She came to the United Sates from Vietnam at the age of 5 with her parents as political refugees.
